The main diff between the '61 frame and the '62> is the seat mounting; the '61 has the tails of the upper tubes just flattened and 'forked'. The later frame has proper lugs which are fitted over the tails of the upper tubes, welded in place and formed upward at the tails to prevent the seat sliding back.
I believe the frame number should have a hyphen: CB77-xxxxx??.
Hawk+Scrambler=?
Yep, there's a hyphen. Seat mounts you say? Check, it has them. Original seat mounts? Now that's a different story, unless the Honda factory back in the 60's sucked at welding. The frame is junk as far as I'm concerned. I'll take what I want off it and toss the rest.
The engine case has no identification, unlike my 2 other motors which both say CL72E. I scrubbed all around the base of the cylinder and only found H2 at the front. I'm guessing the cases are probably replacements. I'm going to mock up the bike first then I'll tear down the motor for rebuild and find out whether it's a 250 or 305.
You guys have been awesome with the information, bare with me while I ask one more stupid question. Did the CB's and CA's kick start rotate in a different direction than the CL's? Or was there a difference bewteen 250 and 305? The motor from the CB frame kicks forward and it appears the CL72 motors kicks backward. Now I'm not 100% positive because there's not much left of the kick starter on either motor but it looks like they have to kick backwards.
Here's some pics of the missing motor ID, frame ID and sad condition of the frame.

interesting montage
Very interesting montage of motorcycle parts...especially the CB-in-front, CL-in-back frame (?)...apparently a Dream engine (?)...somebody did a lot of "customizing" here...looks like fun, good luck and keep us posted, will be interesting to see what you come up with. --Lee

It's a '61 frame number then.FJRrider wrote:Yep, there's a hyphen.
Looks like a replacement upper crankcase. The engine case has no identification
A CL72 should have '247cc' cast into the lowest part of the centre-front of the barrels' fins. With no starter motor, your motor will have a different crank from that of the CB (no starter sprocket oilway).I scrubbed all around the base of the cylinder and only found H2 at the front.
247s have a 54mm bore; 305s are 60mm....then I'll tear down the motor for rebuild and find out whether it's a 250 or 305.
Davomoto answered the first part; no diff between the 250 & 300 on that score.Did the CB's and CA's kick start rotate in a different direction than the CL's? Or was there a difference bewteen 250 and 305?
It looks like the rear seat mounts were hacked off and that cissy bar inserted. Possibly from a CL?
Okay, could be a CB motor since it kicks forward. Though it's probably more likely someone put a CB stator/kicker cover on a CL replacement motor. Looked all over the fins and don't see any numbers.
Next steps will be to stuff that motor into my CL frame. Haven't seen a CL cafe version before. Maybe there's a good reason?
I really like the looks of Flathead's cafe. Sent him a PM about his tank, hoping he replies soon. Otherwise I might have to start fabbing my own from another tank.
Again, thanks for all your help
