cam chain a tooth off?

Post by maia » Sun Feb 20, 2011 6:18 pm

Maybe someone can give me their 2 cents worth on this one. In order to move the points backing plate to a place where the timing is correct acording to Ed's tunup I had to enlarge (make longer) the slots in the plate by about 2mm. When installing the cam chain ...pointer on "T" the line on the cam points down. Well it points down allright as you can see in photo but it just points straight down and I'm wondering if it should point directly at the center of the crank. If I put a straightedge on the line it's not out by much when it gets to the crank. It almost seems like I might have been out a tooth when I put the chain on. I'm just beginning to sort out carb setting etc. but it seems to start right up and run fine. Should I just ignore all this? Thanks alot for all your help along the way, I'm on the final strech now with completing this project, I'll keep you up to date.

Maia, it looks to me like the backing plate is a few degrees CCW from where it should be. By elongating the slot you've made it possible for the points to open up on the 'T' and 'LT' marks on the rotor but that doesn't mean that the rotor/crank is lined up with the camshaft. I'm guessing you're a tooth off.

Thanks Wilf, that's what I figured too finally. I'm learning to not go with my "not so clear sometimes" Clymer manual and rely more on the great advice from this forum. Not too bad though just have to drop the engine. Next thing to fix is replace those fork seal holders with some proper chrome ones.

It's still a lovely looker, Maia. Now all you need to be able to do is ride it to show it off.......!

She's beautiful, Maia!

Let us know what you find with the cam chain.

Steve it's a keeper and it will be my daily ride along with my Vespa. I guess you're in the wrong part of the world for this but I was going to ask if anyone is going to the Vashon Island meet in Washington state this summer. I'm planning to ride down and would it would be great to meet up with some 305 forum people. Thanks for the coments.

Maia,
I almost made the Vashon ride last summer but my re-assembly was a bit too fresh so I decided not to chance it. Too many loose ends needed attention; but I do plan to be there this year. Maybe you can talk Randy in Bellingham to join in. I almost made the oyster run also but it rained and most folks bagged it. Not a very good showing at all. Keep in touch and we'll see if we can rub elbows for sure. Rusty
