Hi Sara

The stuff I use is this....

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Carburettor-M ... 27f82079c0

I think it comes from the States and if I bought it 5 gallons at a time it would be tons cheaper. As it is you can just pop things in there and get on with something else while it gets on with its job. You dilute the fluid 10:1 with water. Some parts will clean up completely and others need a bit of help from a scrubbing brush or the bead blaster if the deposits are stubborn.

This is my favourite result so far. These early footrest hangers are unique to 1961 and I didn't want to blast or mechanically polish them.

These are straight from the cleaner, no other work done on them.....

Today I have been finding a surprising number of grubby engine parts and the results of cleaning are very pleasing..

I will get around to putting the motor back together. Honest!

I have been slowly working through my collection of parts to build up the engine for this bike. The bottom end of the existing motor will go into the final build but the head and barrel are from different sources because the original head was a later one and the barrel had been bored for a 350 kit.

The guy who is going to strip and inspect my crank(s) is busy at the moment so I will have to wait a couple of weeks to get that done. I pulled out the oil pump and filter to check them over and get them cleaned up.

No surprises with the oil pump which was pretty crusty on the outside.

Image

Early oil filters have this big circlip in place of the wire version on later filters.

Image

The pump wasn't too bad inside but it did have a build-up of black sludge like the rest of the bottom end.

Image

I dropped it straight into the cleaning tank to shake out all of that nasty grime and some hardened gasket cement which was stuck to the bottom flange.

Image

The filter was a bit of a disappointment, really. I have had several which were caked in immovable black deposit but this one was pretty clean. I am tempted to think that the motor wasn't run much after the big-bore kit was added and this may be the result.

Image

After the clean up I could get a good look at the pump body. The cavities are often scored with matching marks on the gears. This one looks pretty good with only light marking.

Image

Likewise, the filter cleaned up nicely, too.

Image

I cleaned up a few other parts and have now got a nice selection of rockers and valve springs to choose from. I cleaned up that cam and sprocket a while back but it might get a session in my new-improved cleaner just for good measure.

Image

Back to work and travel next week so not much progress until the weekend.

Yes, I am trying to find one just like that. Floureon 6L. Haven't found one yet here in the US. I learn so much on this forum.
