I found the right side version of that brochure picture on the jacket of a Honda book. Unfortunately pretty low quality. It would be nice to locate some original photographs.

This is a very early prototype bike photographed outside Honda's (actually distributed by Maico in UK) new facility (actually a small town house) in London. That was quite an expensive bike for early 1960s.




A lot of different thinking before they really got going. I'm told that this was one of a few hand-built show bikes.

Hoses on float bowl vents/overflow tubes?

Perhaps a smaller OD crankcase breather hose coming from the top of the cylinder head to the back of the engine?

The carb in #2 pic shows that engine to be a 250 as it has a tube from carb power jet to air cleaner.
As yours G, I've only seen silver LP brackets on the 305 but have seen lots of pics of the 250 with black on black frame. ??????????
Throttle cable behind right side fork tube rather than around front.
Notice how thin the foot peg is?. ....................lm

The bike with the two people facing us has no footpeg rubbers.....

It looks like the rear spindle has a hexagon on it.

The 'early' brit bikes had a small US-style licence plate bracket but they (or certainly some) were silver. There were traces of original silver on mine.

Missing grease nipple at the swing arm bolt.
Black LP bracket is as I see them as US rather than the Brit (large plate mount) and if I could get a better look at the carbs I suspect this bike is a CB72.
The air tube clamp is the only issue shown in the 1968 HONDA CB77 parts book?
Front brake cable appears to come down IN FRONT of the lower triple clamp.
If the front shift part on the shaft is the same as production this trans will not shift to 2nd.
Probably missed a couple of things not mentioned by"G" or me. ................lm

With thanks to DJM for reminding me that I already had this brochure, here are some scans from a (1960 or 61) Honda CB72 brochure. These reveal some confusing details which contradict other period photographs but I suppose the brochures were done before the bikes rolled out in any quantity.


The side view above shows a body color (or black) rear license plate bracket where the UK road test bike had silver. Also shown is a rear brake plate with a short stay, giving a routing for the rear brake cable over the top of the fender. Fascinating to see the passenger footpegs mounted in that position next to the rear shocks. The 'boys' have done a great job of 'deleting' the center stand, too!

Here, the details show the footpeg rubber, perhaps a little fatter than the Clauss Studios reproductions, the wire clips fro the air filter tubes and the early shifter linkage.


This bike doesn't even have footpeg rubbers!! Maybe that hadn't got any available?


And here are the specs. I don't think that there are any surprises here, but it does look like they were using Dream-type clutch and brake levers with the tiny ball-ends....

Yes - oftern referred to as the Dream Supersport in the UK, too. I think the "Hawk" name was already taken in the UK.

No top engine breather on these - just the tower at the back.

My bike did have a couple of pipes drilled into the 'condenser' bracket holes on the cam cover with pipes to the license plate bracket. Motivated by the 350 kit I would think.....
