Now that I have my CL torn apart for painting I decided to finally get into the bottom end to see what kind of problem I inherited. I see the trouble but what may have caused this? The other gears look ok from what I can see. I have seen gear sets on eBay and I am tempted to just replace the set. This is my counter-shaft third gear.

Spoke too soon, checked over the Main shaft and the Third gear shows signs of wear from this whole incident. Also it seems to have a lot of travel to it on the shaft, not sure if that's right. Looking at the counter shaft gear, looks like a tooth got broken which I suspect started the whole thing. I got the bike in this condition so I wasn't there to hear when it happened but I bet it was a screamer... I picked up a set, shafts/gears off of eBay for $97, I hope they do the trick!
So now the question is, is there a preferred sealer to use when I button this thing back up ? Seeing as there are no gaskets and looking at the pictures of the job that was done on the original engine as shown ealy in this post! (Someday that 250 may just come to life with the experience I am gaining getting this 305 apart and back together !)

Hondabond 4 or threebond 1104 are the goods for the crankcase halves. You may want to consider Xing the gears while in there.

Thx for the reply davomoto... I am really torn on this one, with what I have I am truly tempted to pick up a '65 CL77 frame and build the CL77 with all the parts I have now. That would put it close to original '65 CL77 and leave me with a '63 frame and '63 250 motor to turn into the next project.... I wonder what the wife will think if more parts start showing up.... happy weekend all.

Edit: speaking of X'ing the gears it appears that is what had been done and they left the gear cotter off the main shaft second gear allowing it to "float" when it shouldn't have. The tranny I found on eBay supposedly shipped (8 days after paying) and when asked for a tracking number they say, "by the way we forgot to include one of the shafts, that will come seperately...", funny it looked all together in the pics and if each shaft has a gear held on by a cotter how could it have come apart !?!?! I am really beginning to not like eBay... woe is me. -dc

Got the tranny today, turns out the missing shaft is the clutch lifter rod. I can use the one I have so no big deal... even came with what appears to be a brand new sproket, fixing plate and screws! Too bad I had bought a replacement sprocket earlier, same 15 tooth. ...restoring my faith in mankind... now to figure out how to get the kickstart pieces back on the end and I should be good to go. Still haven't been able to track down eye-to-eye shocks for this bad boy so I bid on a alternate swingarm to go back to standrad shocks. Ten bucks to change over seemed like a modest price to pay. Can anyone tell me what a resonable price is for a set of decent shocks for a CL72/77 ? thanks in adnvance -dc

Found the gear cotter, in the engine, many, many tiny pieces! I hope I got them all out. Ready to button the bottom end back up. Got my dull aluminum spray for the cases in the mail, only way I could find it. Ready for a second coat on the frame/pieces and can no longer find to buy the paint I started with. hmm... something to be said about having work done by professional painters... I sure tend to make things difficult on myself just trying to save the $$ by buying cans. -DC
