1964 Honda S600 restoration.

Post by smithenhiven » Mon Nov 27, 2006 2:23 pm

A fellow Honda305.com member Michael Stoic suggested I should post some photos of my S600, so here there are.

I know this has nothing to do with motorcycles, but it has a lot to do with classic Hondas.

I'm not sure how familiar people are going to be with S600's, but this particular car is what's referred to as an Early S600, because it's got the glass covered headlights (amoung many other small differences compared to a later S600). It's actually the oldest "S600" known to exist in the USA (has an extremely low vin number, within the first couple hundred made). This car has only 22,000 kilometers (that's roughly 13,000 miles), has an optional removable hardtop, and it's all original aside from a repaint.

Even though it's a low mileage car, it needs many things gone over and replaced before it can be considered roadworthy; namely the hydrolic components. That's where I am now, having the all the brake cyclinders rebuilt, along with the master cyclinders.

Right now, the drivetrain is out of the car, when the car was repainted many years ago, they never bothered with the engine bay, so I'm going to have that redone to match the niceness of the exterior. Plus I want to clean up the engine and make it sparkle a little more.

I'll post some more pictures as progress is made. My plan is to have this car ready for the road by summer.

Thanks for looking,
Jason.

What a gorgeus little beast!

What year was this S600 made? Do you know how many were produced and where did they go for export?

Give us some motor and performance specs! Looking forward to seeing more photos ...!

Michael

Thank you.

This particular S600 was made in early 1964.

S500's were made in 63 and 64, a total of 1,353 were produced.
S600's were made in 64, through 66 (Coupes came out in 65), a total of 13,084 were produced.
S800's were made in 66 through 70, a total of 11,523 were produced.

Total production of all S-series (not including S2000 of course) was aproximately 25,960 units. I'm not 100% sure on where they went for export, but most were sold in Japan, Canada received a few along with Australia, and some were sold in the UK.

Brief specs:

Engine capacity 606 cc
Horse power: 57 at 8500 rpm
Top speed: 90 mph
Redline: 9,500 RPM
4 carbs
Convertible weight: 1576 pounds
First "mass marketed" Honda car

Jason.

Jason, Very cool little car! Sorta looks like an MG midget, but what a nice companion piece it will be to your CB77. Kustommusic

i do remember it was built in the 60's

was that a later model , or a different model?

305,

It sounds like the car you're referring to was the N600, which shares only the name "Honda" with the S600. The N600 made it's american debut in 1970, and it was a fwd 600cc twin engine.

Oh my Gawd that's one fine looking car. I've never seen one like it before and it's a real treat to view it. I could sure give it a good home. It's got FUN written all over it. Thanks for posting the pictures. I very much enjoyed seeing them. Paul
