1963 CL72/Introduction

Post by splitenz » Tue Jul 22, 2008 8:20 pm

I don't know if I ever properly introduced myself but I know I have conversed with several friendly persons and as I was typing a intro for the VJMOG I thought I could post it here also. Just to say hi to everyone, I will start posting my trials and tribulations of my restore/rebuild here also. I have been a bike enthusiast for years. First ride was a Yamaha DT250, a 1974 I believe, good bike to learn on, I had some friends who had a camp in Cook forest (PA) and learned to beat through the woods at insane speeds. One of the guys had a Z900 (1976) he wanted to get rid of so I picked it up for cruising the streets. A little more than I needed with a Kerker, rat cam and 'bout 1134cc rework in it. I learned about maintaining bikes with the DT & the Z and ended up picking up a GL1000 basket case. Built the GL (complete with Vetter bags and fairing), had it for a couple of years and ended up selling it and the Z when I got married a little over twenty years ago. (wow, three scooters at the same time, those were the days) At the same time I traded the DT for a Suzuki 350 which I sold to a friend of a friend. About 13-14 years ago an uncle of mine offered me a CL72 which he had picked up for his kids but none of them had much interest, they were more interested in cars, so I trucked it home with the intent of redoing it somewhat and weekend riding. Well, I have finally gotten around to getting to it but needed to pull the tranny out to see why it skips every other gear, seems to have 2nd, 4th and neutral. (LM I may take you up on your offer to send the tranny to you for a visit, I'll let you know what I find when I open it up, I am getting closer) Meanwhile I have picked up various new and used parts, stripped it down the frame and nearly have the motor out. I got involved with the 305forum, and just seem to be having a good time taking my time on this project. I hope to be making it down to Mid-Ohio next week to really get a feel for the following on these vintage bikes. Again, just a hello and an introduction...

how not to use RTV

I wanted to get started posting some pics now that I almost have my CL72 apart... I couldn't resist opening the bottom of the original engine I have, I thought it felt a little light. luckily the bike came with a spare...

how it all started..

Post by splitenz » Mon Sep 01, 2008 9:11 am

Here's what I started with, first thing I had to pick up was a kick-start lever (which hasn't weathered very well over the last ~15 years)... All I knew at this point was I had an extra motor in a box. I found this forum and knew I needed the books, although it did come with an original manual and a bunch of reciepts from 1978.

Ya say this is a CL72. May we have the frame and engine numbers. The bike looks to be a CL77 from what I see in the pics. .................lm

yes, LM, therein lies the trouble.... Frame #CL72- 310103 Engine #CL77E-1016184, motor in a box (the one noted above with the 5lbs of orange silicon inside..) CL72-310100. So best that I can tell it's a 1965 CL77 on a 1963 CL72 Frame. Seems a waste to have to do it up as a CL77 but the CL72 engine is missing one of the case covers, the complete tranny and by the looks of the previous work done, in need of COMPLETE overhaul... on a good note it turns... On the other case, just to get it looking good as a "hybrid" and rider, the filter covers have cracks, the front fender mount on the left fork is stripper/cracked, front fender is bobbed, tail light bracket has been "chopped" (as in ears removed), seat is gone but the pan appears to be in good shape (mind you it is a '63 seat)... I am thinking the only choice I have is to fix everything I can, get it running and not post pictures of it here on this board... ;-} From what I have seen around pre-1964 CL anything is not real common.. Your candid opinions and expertise are always welcome. -DC

What I see is a lot of 305 frame parts. Fenders and forks for sure. ....................lm
