1957 Benly JC Progress

Post by Paul Strassmaier » Thu Dec 11, 2008 8:11 pm

Progress to date. This has been tougher than later stuff I've done. Parts are very crude, and don't fit together as well as later bikes!

A couple of updated photos...

Forks were very difficult to assemble. Multiple springs, spacers, etc. Similar to later dream, but most of the cantilever suspension is held in an oil bath in the bottom. Also, while these engines look like 2 strokes, the push rod activated valves are under the top cover. The third pic is the parts bike I am reassembling at the same time.

It looks magnificent!

Great bike to start with, no rust and straight.

Are you missing bits?

Greg

Yes I am missing parts. I never found the headpipe heatshield, the rear footpegs, tail light lens gasket, and the stainless braided fule line. I'm sure there are a few other little bits I'd love to find. I'm on the home stretch now, will post a few photos. I am so tired of cutting down bolts and making gaskets! I'm going back to later stuff after this!

Here's a photo of one of the gaskets I made. I think I got this right the third time. Also, you'll notice the filler piece I had made where the clutch adjuster goes (see the ring).. I had to do this because the seal was unobtainable. 35mm on the outside, 8mm on the inside! Kinda reminded me of that goofy crankshaft seal on a 305. Some of the seals are a little odd and hard to find, like a 28 X 13, or a 27 x16. I found them, but it took a lot of searching!

Here's an updated photo. I still have some bugs to work out, wiring issue in the ignition and fuel lines. Honda used braided stainless steel with banjo fittings on the ends, which are unobtainable, so I'm going to use rubber lines with a braided sheath. I need to make a couple of the fittings I just can't seem to find. I've got the other bike back together now as well...
