Hi,
New guy here. Old time mechanic. Had a VW, Mercedes Benz, Porsche repair garage back in the late 60's. Forgot more than I learned!. I bought the 305 CL 77 back in1972 and have had it ever since (39 years) and rode it very little. It's still in good condition but is in need of 'old age' restoration. I am lucky to still have the original manual and an excellent Honda 300 shop manual. There are some parts that broke and some rotting away. Would like to lean on some of you old pros from time to time. I guess right I'm looking for the best place to buy parts at reasonable prices. Will be retiring soon on a limited budget. Have started disassembling it this afternoon. Thank for reading my dribble.....

Got quite a bit of it disassembled today. Appears that there are only 3 bolts holding the engine/transmission in. But it still looks like it is not able to be removed. Any suggestions?

Welcome to the forum and good luck with the rebuild!
I'm not versed on the CL's but I'm sure there are many here who can point you in the right direction for freeing the engine.

Bogey,
There are four bolts at the trans end, one under the split tube frame at the oil pump base. Other than that, the bracket at the top cylinder. And if I remember right, you'd slide the engine forward, then pull the trans end out first to the right side. Some guys recommend removing the head pipe mounting studs for more clearance and to save the paint during removal/installation.
Hope this helps.

I am in the process of renewing my 66 CL77 which I bought in 1971. Have not ridden it since 1972.
I will be following your progress.

Thank guys,
Will probably move slowly on this project. Too many irons in the fire (Young Marines, Fishin, Golf).
George,
So far have the have everything removed except engine/trans, electrical, fenders, front wheel and fork.
Will be looking to restore to riding condition not show. This bikes been off the road for 30 years. Hope I still remember how to ride LOL.
I need to learn the methods and practices for stripping, cleaning and possibly coating some metal parts. This is all new to me. I'm just an ol mechanic 'fix so it runs' kinda guy. This restoration is all new to me.
Have been taking some pics and have to find out how to post them.

Finally found the old title and realized the bike is a 67 not 65. It's totally apart now with exception of the sub-assemblies. I just got the throttle slide out of the carbs. Boiling like I saw on another post worked like a charm. I like to think ahead and want to reassemble the parts that will back on the frame in a logical order. Any suggestions from you pros?
Also been reading about painting vs powder coating. Any suggestion and actual photos of members results? Also what's the better and most economical method of removing paint and rust, chemical or blasting?
Took pictures of the dis-assembly but flickr will not come up on my computer.
