Three 250 projects 2 CL72's & a CB72...

Post by giuliettashop » Thu Nov 15, 2012 11:37 pm

I used to have a lot of old Honda's -am actually listed as the moderator on this very subject of the forum under my old user ID, the email and passwords of which I no longer have. Well, I dove back in recently with a couple of purchases...

They're all projects right? I bought these three last month.

You might recognize the CB72 as the 1961 Bill Silver listed on eBay recently. Well, it's mine now and a project because I want it to be perfect. To do list is not horrible... repaint fenders and side covers, find correct tail light and shocks, replace dented gas tank, find *better* mufflers etc. I'll post some detail photo's later. It's a nice machine and I'm glad I bought it.

The nice CL72 is a 1965, also a recent eBay listing. It's a VERY nice bike but needs some little details attended too as well... black paint removed from cylinder head and barrel, find unmodified exhaust, replace pitted front rim (can you get these re-chromed?), get seat recovered etc.

I know the machines above are not really *projects* in the same way that a lot of the bikes that land here are, but the last one is...

CL72 roller. Engine turns over. Came with a box of parts. Needs basically everything. Seems like a good idea since I will have cast-offs from the two above that are pretty nice. Anyone have a good speedometer for me??

I'll update here with progress on all three as it is made. I may even throw in the occasional update for my CB160 project as well.

My, they are REALLY nice! I wish I had been fortunate enough to start a project with my bike in as good a condition as those two.

Thanks Sarals.

Some updates...

CB72: I found a correct tail light lens and clutch lever on eBay. I'm going to wait for the brake lever to mount the levers and obviously I have to find the base, socket and trim ring before the tail light lens becomes useable, but it is progress. When the holiday weekend is over I'm going to get the side-covers and fenders to a shop for paint...

CL72 (nice one): I won a complete, nice chrome exhaust on eBay this morning - very exciting. The very nice but cut pipes exhaust on the bike now will be moved to the rough project CL72. I just noticed I may be missing a seat trim that goes around the bottom edge. Did all the Scramblers have a seat trim strip??

CL72 (rough one): I scored a complete headlight bucket with light switch, neutral indicator lens, horn, very nice speedometer, poor trim ring and headlight, a pair of thumb-wheel cable adjusters, a set of levers and perches, a set of handlebar switches (from a CB77), a steering damper and an aluminum rear fender with complete taillight.

CB160: I got a left side NOS exhaust complete!! Need a right side now and it's going to be hard to find.

I'm in the market for an early Dream 250 or 305 to restore -ideally a complete 60 - 62. Anyone here have a stalled project they want to pass on? Will gladly pay for the right bike.

Happy Thanksgiving all!

Nice progress. I am about to start a complete resto on a Dream. I wish parts were as plentiful here in Australia!!! I think I will keep two costing lists, one for the parts and one for postage. See which one is greater when completed.

I just figure the shipping as part of the price.

You could find an intermediate you trust here in the states and have them gather parts and then ship them across the ocean all at once.

I do just that. Coming over in a week or so to pick up my latest pile o' bits.

Being a weary long-distance traveller has its compensations.
