Ongoing Dream

Paints done - a few minor touch ups to do - New front and rear wheels, spokes and tires. Now comes the hard part - assembling the rest of it and the eternal chase for misc. hardware

When you say "eternal chase for misc. hardware" are you missing stuff that you know is in your garage somewhere? Or are you talking about part number X which no one, anywhere, seems to have?
If it's the latter, I have found some interesting off-book solutions to some of these items made of Unobtainium.
There's the Tail Light Bracket Grommet (33714-268-000), try
GR3002A
The Grommet in the valley of the upper case (32951-250-000), GR3155A (same page as above)
The tail light wire grommet through the fram inside the right side cover (not listed anywhere) Try GR3076A or GR3065A (Not sure yet which one fits better.)
Don't wanna pay $0.61 for a steel cotter pin? How about $0.05 for
Stainless?
You know those thin nuts that we're supposed to have inside the side covers on the knob shafts, 94002-06000-0S Nut, Hex, Thin, 6mm? Bike Bandit will sell you those for $1.90 each in shiny pretty zinc plated steel. Or you could pay
sixteen cents for
both of them in stainless steel.
Just sayin... :)

I am fairly good at chasing down parts - I just can't do it in one trip - It takes many trips.
The JIS hardware is a particular problem. I now have a 6MM ISO tap and a few dies. So when necessary I can tap for a 6mm ISO - the problem is if you tap one hole in the engine cover for ISO you have to remember which one it is or tap all of them.

I hear ya. Do you happen to know which are the trouble spots for JIS? I know that if it's 5mm it could be ISO or JIS, depending on when a particular change was made. IE, points plate screws, points cover screws, condenser mount holes, petcock mount holes. But as I understand it, the very common 6mm didn't change. Is that correct, or are there 6mm x 1 along side 6mm x .9 or something?
Personally I haven't had the absolute need yet as all my 5mm hardware is still usable, but one thing I'd like to bring back to code is my missing speedo cable clip, which I can get from Ohio Cycle but mounts to the fender brace with a 5x10mm screw. I guess I could just tap it to 6mm and get a 6x10...

I figured at the outset that I wasn't going to spend time and money chasing down JIS hardware. It 's fairly easy (and cheap) to find the proper drill bits and taps and dies for ISO. The difference between JIS and ISO isn't much so usually if you run an ISO tap or die it is easy and you still have good threads.
