I like your thinking!!

You're going to have a NICE bike when you get it done. You have a wonderful approach to doing this!

Finally got the engine out of the frame ready to open up.

The only problem was a broken idler wheel. The shaft broke and the screws backed themselves out and fell to the sump. I was able to fish them and the washers out with a magnet. I'm hoping the end of the shaft will be in the sump and I can reach it when I pull the oil pump.

Pistons and rings look good (new rings on order).

Head looks good although pretty oil and carboned up. Will clean up nicely with a valve lap.

Image

Cylinders look good....no scratches. A hone and they'll good to go.

A question for the collective. I'll be replacing the oil seals in the bottom. I figure I'll drill a small hole in each, thread in a screw and pull them out. Is there another technique out there that others are using to get them out?

Thanks. Rock on.

Another small step of progress

Finally go the oil pump out and as luck would have it the missing shaft end dropped out onto the bench. All missing parts are accounted for.

Upon closer inspection of the oil pump I discovered that the oil drain threads were all buggered up. Even with some kind of sealant I'm sure it will leak. So I'm gonna drill it, tap it and install a new drain bolt. I'll drill the head for safety wire too.

New threads cut and a new, drilled drain plug.
