63 CA77 Dream Project

Well I finally got my 305 Dream last year. I've been slowly purchasing parts and trying to get it running. I built a new wire harness, cleaned carb, new points, new condenser, new aftermarket coil, new plugs, new bulb in old headlight, and gone through timing and tune up. I think I need to go back through the carb because the plugs are staying dry, and I'm not getting gas out of the float drain. Tried starting it with some starting fluid in the plug holes, and got a little sputter, which made me quite happy. Compression sounds good, and it kicks over fine.

Anyway, I'm hoping to get it running soon. I had two CA160s a couple of years ago that I rode to work in Kalamazoo for a while. I've always wanted a 305, and I'm getting close to finally being able to ride it. I wanted to post and thank everyone for contributing to this forum. I don't think I would still be into these old bikes if it wasn't for the great community and contribution here. If anyone lives near Kalamazoo, I may need some help at some point, if I can't figure it out on my own.

Drop the float bowl and move the float around to see if gas starts flowing. Maybe its stuck.

Thanks Hahnda, that's what I'll do next. The carb rebuild kit that I got from Ohio Cycle wasn't for my 63 carb, but I was able to use the gasket and the float valve.

I'll try that tomorrow and post back.

You also may need to put a hole on the other side of your temporary fuel tank to allow air to take up the space that the fuel will drain from. Here's what I do. Note the breather tube at the top and I use a carabiner to attach the tank to the bars or the cables:

I made the vent hole in the bottle a little bigger, and added a carabiner (thanks for the tip bbap:) I popped off the carb bowl and made sure I had gas flowing. I also took off the ground strap and cleaned up the bolt, holes, and the paint around where the ground strap makes contact with the frame. I'd been meaning to do that.

The bike sputtered a few times, and acted like it wanted to start. Plugs are getting a little wet now. Tried starter fluid again, but still didn't start.

I've got the trickle charger on it now. I'll try again tomorrow.

I also need to spend time on the tank. The petcock moves freely, so I'm hoping I'll be able to use this one. On my 160s, I opted to remove the petcock all together, and I fashioned a shut-off in it's place. The tank has some surface rust inside, so I'll need to clean that out. That's the main reason I'm using the pop bottle at the moment.
