Rob's 1966 CB160

Post by Snakeoil » Mon Jul 16, 2012 9:03 am

Here's a few pics of the CB160 I picked up last fall. Spent the last week going thru the bike and making her look fresh. Paint is all original and there are 5K miles on the odo.

Bike belonged to a co-worker. His dad bought it from a kid when it was a year or so old and all the boys in the family learned how to ride on it. Then, in the early 70's, he drained the tank, misted it with oil, put new oil in the engine and put it in his dry basement where it sat until last year. He called me one day and asked if I'd like to buy the bike.

Side covers were missing and I've since found a set that I've primed and need to finish paint. I have two original mufflers I've rechromed and a set of original headers that are excellent to install with the rechromed mufflers.

Every piece on the bike, nut bolts, bulbs, etc. are original. Only other missing piece was the rear mudflap. But I got lucky and scored one off a roached bike last week.

Need to rebuild the petcock with new seal, put a battery in her and will try to fire her up. Hopefully, she won't need much to get running. Keeping my fingers crossed that the e-start works.

Here are a few shots I took yesterday.

I love finding bikes that were stored indoors. Almost all the small rubber bits like carb cable boots are original and in excellent shape. Even the original tires were not checked or rotted. They will clean up nicely and would be valuable to a museum quality restoration.

Rob

That's an absolute beauty. I bought mine from an English guy in Connecticut a few years ago. Not nearly as nice as yours but slowly undergoing a full restoration.

Your pictures will provide an excellent reference. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks G-man. Let me know if you need close-ups and I'll provide. I'll continue to post photos in my Photobucket album. Here's the link to the album.

Put on the exhaust today. Mufflers are originals I got from a friend that had lost their chrome and rusted. Had them rechromed. Headers were a find last week on Ebay. Chrome is almost like new. Lucky find.

Here's the bike with the exhaust and toolbox installed.

The ugly hubs kill me to look at. But I'll get around to them one of these winters.

Thanks guys. The pics are at out summer place. Nothing fancy. Small camp on a bit lake.

Got the bike fired up today. New plugs, new gas, original points. Had to hit the points with a file and then some 400 grit paper. Spark reappeared and she fired almost immediately with one push of the starter button.

Everything on the bike worked!! Every bulb, hi/lo beam, horn, instrument lights, even neutral light, although somebody switched the neutral and instrument position.

Fired it up on my shop battery while new battery was charging. Got the new battery in her before dark and was able to take her for a spin on our road. First ride was with full 1960's Honda riding gear. Shorts, no shirt, and flip-flops. You meet the nicest, semi-naked people, on a Honda.

She runs like a raped ape. Amazing how hard she pulls for a 160cc engne. Baffles are not in the muffler and it will probably stay that way. I love the exhaust note from 160's.

Here's a video that might give you a chuckle. I made it for the guy I work with and who sold the bike to me. It was too big to send as an email attachment so I posted it on YouTube.
