Lead additive?

Post by Deceptibong » Wed Oct 20, 2010 1:45 pm

So I picked up a 1967 ca160

my question is.

does this bike and others like it need lead added to the gas to lube the valves?

we just got it up and running and my friend's Dad (he likes old bikes too) says it needs some lead additive put into the gas.

Does this sound right?

thanks
D

Ask that in the UK and you will hear all sorts of stories of valves sinking in the head etc, but it doesn't seem to be much of an issue for most bikes. The old CA had a cast iron skull which is fairly soft so it's possible, but I wouldn't worry about it.
