1966 Honda CB450 1 inch crack on verticle bar of frame

I am taking apart my 66 Honda Cb450 so I can perform a full restoration on her.
It was during this time that I saw an unusual crack (about 1 inch long) on the vertical bar part of the frame facing the rear.
I am including a picture of the crack on the bar.

What could have caused this? My plan is to clean that area up and take it to get welded shut.

Any ideas or feedback?

Thanx!

Looks like the tube may have filled with water at one time, then froze. Are there any kind of drain holes on the lower end?

I would agree and say that is exactly what happened.

I'd give the entire bike a good going over for more signs of this.

If you are going to have the bike sandblasted, it migh be worth your while to do a good visual then. You might also slightly pressurize the frame tubes with air and then douse with soapy water and look for bubbles. Might be other cracks that are less obvious. Will mean plugging other holes, but they don't have to be air tight. Just enough so you can put some pressure inside. A bicycle pump works great for this kind of test. Just keeps some pressure on the handle and squirt soapy water all over the frame.
