Out of the 3 junkyard engines I bought, CB,CA,CL, I can salvage 1 good set of crankcases if I put the CL top on a CB or CA bottom. Did Honda sell case halves individually, or did they make you to buy a 'matched' set of crankcases? If they wouldn't sell individual halves it's a good indication that they were machined as a set and not meant to be swapped around.
I don't have enough parts cleaned or bought to do a test fit- wondering if I need to start looking for a matched set of cases.

Re: mis-matched crankcases
All the wet sump cases can be replaced as one piece.
One thing to look for is that the bottom case must have the 2 mounts for the primary chain tensioner.
That was a change after the EARLY engines didn't come with the tensioner but is needed if ya going to run the engine at speed.
No real external changed can be seen. ...........lm
