I am at the point of removing the rotor, and bought a 16mm x 2 mm bolt. Diameter is right ( at least the way I measured it) but the thread pitch is wrong. It wont fit. Is the appropriate bolt a 16 mm x 1.5mm ? or a 16mm x 1 mm. ? I didnt see any bolts on the bike that looked like they would work. (The other 2 Honda projects always had a bolt somewhere that worked as a removal tool ! ) Any enlightenment ?

Take the rear axle bolt that the rear wheel spins on and use it. It is the right size and pitch. Screw it in making sure the threads on the bolt and rotor are clean. Snug it up good and tap on the bolt head with a rubber/lead hammer and it should pop off the tapered crank extension. Watch that you don't lose the woodruff key or the starter clutch rollers. Look at your book to see all the pieces involved. If there is oil in that area look at the seal in the large starter sprocket and the crank seal behind it.

Thanks, but the rear axle was the first thing I tried. Its too large in diameter. I measured the hole at approx 0.615 in I.D. ( as I recall) which works out to be 15.6 mm. approx. and thus should be probably a 16mm. bolt. I cannot find anything else in the pile of ziploc bags which now constitutes my #1 CB77. Looks like I will just go to the auto parts store and get a couple of 16mm bolts of 1 mm and 1.25 and 1.5 mm. pitch and try them on my next day off.

I too ran into that problem, I tried both axles and none of them fit. I was lucky to find a bolt that worked "in a bucket of bolts" in my shop. I am not sure of the size and pitch of the bolt.

Kustom: no offense taken. Yes, I did try the front axle, and that one is too small. I was sure that somewhere on the bike there was a bolt that would do the job, but my search of all the ziploc bags that now constitute this bike turned up nothing looking even remotely close. I had a bolt that I used on a CB 550 several years ago, but cant find it now. ( Organization !! Organization !!) I have today off and will go to the local auto parts place and get my usual dose of humor from them, and then buy a couple of bolts. Will post size if I get one that works.
