FINALLY went for a ride with the Superhawk today. It was great, if still running a bit imperfect. My first question comes down to jetting. I started with the 130 jets that came in my carb kit from ClassicHondaRestorations.com. It ran very poorly on the main jet. I then went up to a 135. It ran worse. Went down to a 125, then a 120. The "dead spot" in the throttle kept shrinking, till I tried a 110 (since I only have one 115 from my neighbor's stash) and it ran better, but choked REALLY hard on the dead spot. Bob (my neighbor) told me that the Superhawk was sold with anything from a 105 to a 135 jet depending on where it was going. Is this true? Can I try a 105? I don't have any, only 95's (I assume they're from a CB160), so can I try a 95 and see how off it is? Why would it be running so rich to begin with? This is a 90%-Charley (from Charley's Place) built motor with HIGHER flowing filters and baffle-less stock pipes. How would it have some form of extra restriction?
Also, my engine seems to be hemorrhaging oil from some hidden location. It is a brand new engine and did this from the first start. Are these engines known to have some oil leaking? I come from a classic BMW (car) world where EVERYTHING leaks. I just re-tightened the head nuts and will see if it continues, but I'm just curious if others require a drip pan under their Hawk.
Thanks for the help!

Hi,
Do you run standard mufflers and air filters ?
Is the carb jetted according to spec and Ed's recipe ?
What is your altitude ?
Are the inside of the mufflers clean (no flow restriction ) ?
CB's tend to be on the lean side when jetted standard, and thus seems not logical to make it even leaner,

I looked down the mufflers before putting them on and saw nothing. I did set the carbs to Ed's recipe. I have Unifilter single layer light foam on stock filter frames with the stock rubber boots. I am at sea level here. Hopefully I'm not mis-reading this and going LEANER. Doesn't seem to be that way, maybe I'll look into it more tomorrow just to make sure-- for my sanity.

Hi,
What needles do you run ?
Are the carbs in good condition ?
What about the main jet needle holder part pressed in the carb body ?, is it round or oval ?
Did you check your ignition ?
There must me s simple reason why th engine acts like this.

I used the Unifilter-recommended oil that came with them. Should I not? I thought about that before. Maybe I'll pop them off (and keep the hoses on) to see how it runs-- better or worse. The ignition was set and I check it almost every time I ride with the timing light to make sure it's still in check. Can't rev it too high since I'm still breaking it in.
