stuck clutch??
stuck clutch??Gentlemen, not been around for a while, been restoring an old Ariel Leader, ( awful bike)
Anyroadup, just this morning I pulled out the CA77, covered in dust, cleaned her up, shoved in fuel, switched on & BAM, instantly running sweet as a nut!! So, run it round the block, a few times eh, er-no, put in gear & she stalled out, operated the lever many times, still stuck, back on the stand, wheel clear, clutch in, in gear, & off she went, brake on, stall!! Then tried revving the nuts off it, both brakes on hard, in gear & the bike shot off overcoming the brakes, wont be trying THAT again!! Clutch bung off, lever seems to operate correctly, so obviously the plates are somehow WELL stuck, is this normal after 8 or so months lay-up? Is the another 'dodge' I can do to free it all up, or is it a cover off job?? GSX1400 Red/silver

Seems like you have tried all the dodges to free it off, it sounds as if it's well stuck and the only solution is to take the thing apart. I know it's a pain but there is probably no other guaranteed way. Did you have the engine good and hot when you tried to free it? When I lay a 72 or 77 up as I am passing it I pull the clutch in a few times every couple of weeks, it seems to work. Al.
Hi Alan,
many thanks for that, & yes, I pulled the clutch, all looked perfect, BUT, it all came out as one lump, I could NOT part the plates, a large flat screwdriver was twisted between them & with a fair bit of force, it all came apart!! All friction & plain plates were like new, so no real cleaning necessary, (but I did anyway) re-assembled, fired up & she runs nice now with a smooth clutch!! So I must remember to operate the lever every month or so. Thanks again. This is it now finished. https://www.dropbox.com/s/2ymsj75ksmb4nuj/Done.jpg?dl=0 GSX1400 Red/silver

I hope you enjoy riding it and hope you enjoy cleaning bikes too as it will take some work to keep it looking that smart.
