C72 Help Required

Post by G-Man » Sun Apr 11, 2010 1:48 am

Picked up my 'new' C72 yesterday and stored it away in Father in Law's Barn (90 miles from home). I just had time to take a few pics.

The engine number is C72E - 2108460 which, I think, makes it a 1962 bike. Is that right?

I cannot work out where the frame number is, not helped by rust and failing light yesterday evening. Could someone point out to me where the number is located, please? This bike looks very original and unmolested apart from the english muffer grafted onto the right hand side. Apparently the original owner lost confidence after he dropped it and just stored it away. The tyres look original to me with little wear.

Apart from the rust, the motor is seized but all of the other controls and moving parts appear to be fine. The clutch action is beautifully light.

I'm intrigued by the rear light. Never seen that shape before. I presume that they changed this a little later on.

Any help, comments, advice gratefully received

A little bit of improvization on the muffler.

Is that a stainless muffler? Seems to have escaped the rust.

Unfortunately only one badge survived. I think that I will frame it.

VIN should be on left side of frame near the sidestand mount bolt, placed vertical.

This is the engine number, taken yesterday. I count 7 digits. What would be the significance of 7 or 6 digits?

Do you recognize the tail light in my earlier pic. I've never seen one like that.

Well ya learn new things all the time for sure.
Being a Domestic bike I assume HONDA started that issue with 7 digits.
Ya locate the frame number?
Tail light is a early/Domestic. ........................lm

I won't get to see the frame for a week or so as the bike is in my Father in Law's Barn. When I get see it again, I'll let you know the number.

I have a second engine, also with 7 Digits C72E- 2123892. Although the frame for this engine was badly damaged and scrapped long ago, the wiring harness for it says 1962.

When you say 'domestic' does that mean 'non North American' or is there a more subtle distinction. The second bike came with a set of completely different turn signals (blinkers). They still form part of the clutch / brake lever bracket but look like bug antennae with round lenses. I think those were for a different European region.

Thanks very much for the help.
