my idler was still in pretty good shape....not nearly as brittle or hard. i dont know how critical the diameter of that idler is....with the tensioner you have some wiggle room their since its position is somewhat variable anyway. i dont see any reason you couldnt do it, but i dont know. those wheels are pretty widely available, 25 bucks or so, i think?
as to the teflon guide, that doesnt seem like a bad way to go...i have heard of people making a new roller from teflon, easy enough to do on a lathe, probly even do that on a wood lathe. heck, you could probably knock one out with some clever drill press work and a sharp chisel.....at some point i think i might try this, or get a pulley from a z1 kaw like bill silver suggests. nice thing about that tensioner wheel is it is just right there, 4 bolts and no major surgery.
