Whizzing/chain type noise except in gear not moving (FIXED!)

Post by hooptytank » Wed Sep 27, 2006 3:17 pm

Hello all. My 63 CB77 trans makes this noise that is coming from the left side of trans, anytime the engine is running in neutral or moving down the road on accel/decel. In neutral it doesn't matter if the clutch is engaged/disengaged. The noise stops whenever its in gear and not moving but starts up as soon as the wheel starts turning.

The best I can describe the noise is a whizz / buzz or loose chain. I'm assuming it has something to do with the countershaft or the primary chain.

Any input as to possible causes and fixes, or what to look for is appreciated.

Hoopty, Sounds like it could be alot of things! And I'll be honest, there are more knowledgable guys on here than me But I get to take the first guess! 1. cam chain slack adjuster 2.centrifical oil filter, and chain and washer that goes in there(has to be in the right place) 3. you didn't say if you kick starter worked allright, but if not you'll need to check all the bits that make that work, could be it too. Good Luck with this I'm sure you will get some other good ideas too. Steve

If the kick start lever is not fully returning it will have an intermitten sound as you described. You can check it by starting the bike and moving the lever around a bit. I've had that happen on to of the CB77's I've had, so it must be a common problem.

I think I posted how to fix it somewhere around here...

I'm freaked out about this because a co-worker of mine had a CB77 in the 60's and he told me that his chain let go on the freeway and locked up the rear tire. He managed to keep it upright, but probably needed a change of underwear.

I bought the bike with no kick start lever (the only missing piece), and I bought the last remaining kickstart gear from Honda parts stock(they still had it!). the original had stripped splines, and now, I'm looking for an arm assembly (anyone have one they are willing to part with?), so I can't really move the lever around, unless I get some pliers around the spline shaft :O. is it possible that I mis installed the new gear? I turned and preloaded the "idler" gear and coil spring to where the punched dots line up in the 2 gears. Is there a correct or different method of installing it?

The reason I ruled out the cam chain is that the noise stops completeley when i put it in gear and the bike is not moving, and since the cam chain is still turning I assumed its ok. I will check the tension though. The way I see it is as long as the countershaft, clutch basket and primary chain are stopped its quiet. The more I think about it, the more I think I'm answering my own question, but experienced feedback is invaluable, so keep it comming please!!

All right! I'm relieved and can sleep at nights now!

The problem was the kickstarter shaft not fully returned. Took the cover off and spun the shaft clockwise. it clicked about 5 times and locked into place. I then cranked the engine over with the starer, and the shaft turned counter clockwise a little. I rotated it back into its locked/neutral position.

After the shaft was in its spot, I spun the kick start gear clockwise a bit, and put the cover back on. Now the return spring has a clockwise preload on it, always forcing the shaft to its neutral spot. QUIET! Went for the first real ride finally and man... it was sweet! Now I just have to drop the engine and regasket the whole top end to fix the 4-5 oil leaks it has. :(

Thanks for all the help!

May I suggest that everyone who has a problem and fixes it, edits their original post Title to include (FIXED!) or someting similar. That way anyone can easily find fixes in this database, plus it helps people learn something new about their bikes.
