Plastic sleeves on banjo bolts?

Post by FiremanBob » Thu Nov 09, 2006 8:51 pm

The banjo bolts on my carbs (CB77, Keihin) have some clear plastic sleeves that cover the holes in the bolt bodies. Are these normal?

Also, why do the banjo fittings not have part numbers in the parts manual diagram on page 46? I can't find them listed in any other part of the manual.

Thanks.

Don't know anything about the sleeves, but I can tell you this, all those parts without reference numbers were only ever sold as part of the complete carb assembly. Keihin probably had part numbers for them at one time, but Honda never did.

My banjo bolts each have a sleeve of very fine metal mesh that I assume are intended to act as fuel filters. Not sure if this has any relation to your plastic sleeves...

Why remove the mesh?

It slows the gas to the bowl and Honda discontinued installing it during the 1967 bike production.
The mesh actually holds gunk between it and the bolt at times. .......lm

Interesting...I learned the hard way early on that I could "run out of gas" even though there was some gas left in the tank...the engine would die, I'd check for fuel in the tank, see there was some left, and proceed to troubleshoot other systems, and find nothing wrong. I was stumped. Finally it dawned on me that maybe the mesh filters in the petcock and banjo bolts were creating just enough resistance to prevent the last cupful of gas in the tank from reaching the carb bowls...refilling the gas tank solved the problem. So I learned never to run the tank too low. Your suggestion to remove the banjo bolt mesh might just solve that problem...Thanks. Jesse

PS--do you recommend an inline filter instead? Or just leave it to the petcock screen to be the only filter in the line? I have some untreated tank rust and not sure the screen is adequate.
