I've already tried to isolate which side the problem is on by two different methods:

1. Pulling a plug wire off and running on one cylinder, then the other. That didn't help, because the engine wouldn't race when running on one cylinder. It might, though, if I actually removed the plug from one cylinder, as you suggested.

2. Closing both air screws completely, then opening one of them to see if just one carb, set normally, would cause the racing. Both carbs seem to be contributing almost equally to the problem, because either carb, set normally, with the other air screw closed, results in about the same degree of racing.

But next time around I will try removing a plug and see what happens. I'm hoping to get to it this weekend and am going to try some things with the throttle cable and also replacing the throttle valves.
