Miss at 3/4 and full throttle

Post by joeweir1 » Tue Apr 03, 2007 7:24 pm

I have had this problem of a miss or acting like it running out of fuel since I got my bike on the road two years ago( still original engine) and today was my first day firing up the Dream and riding. It started right up.But I still have this miss(bike starts jerking and lerching and when throttle backed off it smooths out) and I'm not sure if it is ignition or fuel.I have tried different jettting, float level and also tried closing choke while riding to see if that would tell me if it was running too lean, but no change. Now I'm suspecting possible coil.Even though I do have a new aftermarket coil since day one.I may try my old stock coil.Could it be condensor or advance springs on Cam shaft?Have good fuel flow thru petcock.

I have a somewhat similar problem. I wouldn't say mine misses but up in the 3/4 to full throttle range it doesn't quite have what it should. Have also done some jetting changes. I do not have an aftermarket coil on it but was going to try one. May not fix it though.

One thing I ran across and thought was worth a try was this,

My plugs foul out after a couple of hundred miles. I think its worth a try and could easily be reversible.

Kevin- thanks-My plugs are not fouling at this time.I just have this missing at 3/4 or full throttle.I may put my old stock coil on to try.I have not ran the bike with it,just the aftermarket one. What symptoms does a too lean mixture give me?Joe

Your plugs may not be fouling but do you do any extended riding at 3/4 throttle? I didn't notice the problem until I was riding 150-200 miles per day last summer on the Dream.

Lean you would have white plugs and be running hot. You said you tried the choke thing and there was no difference so you probably aren't running lean.

I'm convincing myself more and more that my jetting problem is an ignition problem. Won't know til I try it though.

Joeweir, You asked about lean symptoms, I found that almost everything when its lean backfires thru the carb. (only) especially on acceleration or high speeds. Can you tell I do some drag racing? If your plugs are not white your probably not lean, look at your ignition. Good Luck, Kustommusic
