CA77 Petcock Removal

Post by Dogsbd » Sat May 19, 2007 4:17 pm

Attempting to get petcock off of gas tank. Removed the bowl with 17mm socket, removed the screen and rubber gasket but the 3 phillips screws will not budge.

I don't want to destroy the screws getting them out, any tips on getting them to loosen up?

I've got the tank inverted on my workbench and the top of the upside down petcock filled with WD40. It's been soaking like that for 24 hours and I'm just going to leave it until I get home from work tomorrow and give it another try.

Still no joy.

I'm now letting it soak with CRC Power Lube, maybe that will help. I've also done the insert screwdriver into head of screw and hit with hammer trick numerous times.

Any suggestions on other penetrants to try? My father used to always have good luck with Liquid Wrench on the farm.

might be time to invest in a impact driver
short of that , a #2 philips on a 3/8 extension and a T handle.
put the tank on a seat cushion, down on the floor so you can really lean on it.

If that don't get it, drill the heads off. those should be std 6mm you can get at most hardware stores.

I used Liquid Wrench, and applied it for 3 days before they finally cane out. WD40 is not really a penatrant. It is a water displacer and light lube. Good Luck. Steve
