Sticking slides

Post by deaddog » Wed Jul 18, 2007 10:04 am

CB77 1961

I am getting frustrated with my carburetors. The slides are sticking especially in the full throttle position. I have freed them up several times and went on long rides and they worked perfect until the next time I go to use the bike.

I know it is taboo to sand the throttle body and slides, but I confess I have done that. Has anyone experienced a similar situation? I am a little perplexed that I get them snapping closed and they work perfect until the next time I use the bike.

What ya describe happens when the nuts are tighter than they need to be.
I don't put a lot of pressure on mine because many years back I had the same problem. .........lm

Thank You LOUDMOUSE! When I got home I opened the throttle all the way without starting the bike and sure enough the throttle was stuck wide open. I loosened the mounting bolts and SNAP I heard the slides slam shut. I have the bolts just a little tighter than finger tight. I hope they will not loosen up when riding. I would have never figured out that problem. Kudos my friend.

A racing trick...
Put clear silicon on the bolt end after loosing nut-
will help keep nut in place.
Fish tank silicon is pure-the best-local hardware store.

sticking slides

This might seem a little off the wall, but I have done it many times.
like LM says the problem is the carb body getting warped from being overtightened.
remove the carbs, set the flange on a flat plate and close study will show that the ears are bent forward. I set the carb up in a press with some thin shims under the ears and a piece of wood over the carb mouth. press and check on the flat plate. adjust shim thickness and pressure as needed to get the flange face flat. replace the fiber spacers or sand them flat on some sand paper on the flat plate. you will now be able to tighten the carb nuts to a moderate NORMAL tightness. don't over do it.
