Only one gear!! and it seems like it is 4th

Post by FluteTears » Sat Jul 21, 2007 1:15 pm

Ok got the new tires on the bike today running good went for that first drive and found I have one gear and I think it is forth one shot up. So pulled the left cover and found that something is wrong in the shifting drum? Any way one up clicks just fine one down and the fork pops out and hits the chain something is broke or loose. Now when I looked at them chains I wonder are the timed? Do I need to look for marks TDC? And the clutch I see 4 bolts is that the starting point to take it apart? I have a service book on the way but now that I did that first ride well you know I am ready to run with it!!
I was hoping it was a problem that the CT90s have that the star gear bolt whould become loose but this looks like more then that.
Thanks

Gears are 1 down all the way and the rest up.Neutral plus 2,3,4.Also look at the photo and see if the small spring or pin is missing with he washer and cotter pin. That spring and pin holds the drum fork back towards the drum. You can see this by looking behind clutch assy.Any parts laying in the bottom below the clutch? You can only remove the clutch plates and center hub by removing the 4- 10mm bolts and clutch springs. You will have to remove the the drive sprocket for the primary chain if you want to remove the whole clutch basket.I have other photos if needed.Joe

Well I did find that spring and key in palce I messed with it for a bit then it started shifing gears just fine now. Maybe from sitting it got stuck in some way. Not sure that I should trust that but I think I will put it back together and see what I have
Thanks for the help

Well I put it back together today and its shifting but not correctly
I should have
4 speed trans.
DOWN 1ST
UP ONE NEUTRAL
UP TWO 2ND
UP THREE 3RD
UP FOUR 4TH

What I do have is
Down 1st
Up one 2nd
Up two 3rd
Up three neutral
Up four 4th

It is also rather hard shifting I am still thinking the shifting drum I hope it is something simple the bike sure runs good.
So back into it I go

Sounds like you need to split the case and check it out.I never did it on the bike, but you could do it without dropping the engine.Good luck
