Clutch lever spring

Post by ggray » Wed Aug 22, 2007 8:13 pm

Hi guys,

While replacing worn out items on my 1965 CL77, I purchased a new clutch lever spring, PN 22815- 259-010. It's the one that fits inside the RH case and attaches to the clutch lifter thread and, I am presuming, the small hole in the inner case rib.

Although it looks to be the correct spring when compared to all illustrations I can find. It looks to be too long as the spring barely begins to pull when the lifter thread is at it's highest point (Clutch fully engaged).

Attached is a photo of the spring I received from Ohio Cycle for PN 22815-259-010.

Does this look to be the correct spring?

The one I took off the bike was shorter and began to exert spring tension with the first movement of the thread, although it was obviously not an OEM spring. I replaced it due to wear in one of the eyes.

Any idea why it's fitting, or not fitting as It would appear to need to????

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Gary

Not even close. Much to long. If the coils are the same length ya can bend the long end to fit the distance required. ........lm

Great. I was just about to order one of these from Ohio Cycle. Back to the drawing board. Anyone have a return spring for a later cover they will part with?

Just emailed them. Thanks. I'm surprised nobody here has a spare.

Can anyone tell me the total length of a later clutch return spring for a CA77? I'm going to start hunting.

Early style clutch thread return spring specs...

Post by rzgkane » Sat Mar 17, 2012 2:58 pm

I NEED someone's help here. I am replacing my 1965 CA77 Dream's early style right cover with a later style that I had refinished. Main difference is the angle at which the clutch cable enters the cover. Early is 45 degrees from the rear and late is 90 degrees from above.

HONDA shows that an updated thread return spring is used in the later cover and I do not have one. The early style spring (pic is below) measures 53mm. Is the later style longer or shorter than this? I used the early style and it seems to work fine but I'm wondering if I'm using too short a spring that will eventually fail and I'd prefer to make it right before I reinstall the cover.

Pic of early spring installed in later style cover below. Is this spring going to be taxed too much? Do I need a longer spring?
