sticking / rusted carb slides

Post by Macgyver5 » Tue Sep 11, 2007 12:51 am

So I recently bought a 1964 cb77 Superhawk that was in dry storage for 35 years well I've pulled the carbs apart to start with them. I've pulled them both off the bike with the cable still attached because the slides were rusted in a little I've sprayed them with carb cleaner and stripped one of them down with the exception of getting the slide out. I don't want to be rough on it so I'm looking for some options. I've thought about soaking them in an oil bath but don't want to waste the oil if I don't have to. So if there are any ideas out there they would be much appreciated...

I've added a few pics so you'll be able to see what I'm talking about...

Thanks

I've had this several times. I use P B Blaster and don't get in a hurry. Spray it on several times a day for a couple then pull the cable or put a piece of nylon/plastic between the carb body and slide on the intake side and pry.
Don't use anything that will damage the slide. ..............lm

Have ya tried a paint stripper heat gun or just a hair dryer? It may work. If not. Using pry/pressure at the intake side of the slide leverage the slide with any tool that will fit into the cut away area of the slide. Be careful so ya don't put a couple of dings in the slide. If you do and can get it out a fine cut file will smooth the slide. .................lm

Sometimes what's got it stuck is only soluble in water. Try it, you may be suprised.
