63' CB77 Not So Stock Build
After 68' there were some changes made that would keep them (69' and later) from being used without modifications to the case. The space between 2nd and 3rd gear on the countershaft, was filled by a thrust washer to a needle bearing (in a washer-like configuration). And that's the main thing I know of. Seems like I've heard that the shift forks and/or shift drum is/are different. I should have the 68' 350 trans before too long and I'm going to do a trial fitting before I do anything else.

Well thanks, actually though, I'm using info from at least 2 folks who've given it to me to the best of their recollection. Now, if I can only pull it off! When I'm through, I hope to have a fine running 305 Super Hawk breathing through a pair of CB450DOHC carburetors (with the ports cleaned up a bit), shifting through the 68' CB350 5 speeds, checking my engine and bike speed through a set of CB350 gauges, in a slightly racy position from moving the pegs back some and the use of a set of the low Super Hawk bars, feeling a bit lighter because of the use of a set of pods for air cleaners (leaving off anything not needed) and listening to that beautiful sound emitted from a set of reverse cone megaphones (which will also be lighter than the stock mufflers). Still Haven't decided on a paint scheme yet. Kinda thinking of a shade of blue that I used on my old CB72 250 Hawk many years ago. That was the bike that gave me the inspiration to have another one. Still not locked into the ALL the details of this one though. If the bike comes together anywhere near like I'm hoping, I may go back and do some things like tapered roller bearings in the steering and do some things to liven up the suspension too. My old CB72 ran on Dunlop K70's and I'd like some more or, at least, some suitable replacements. I also want to give the bike some firepower in the way of lights too! I don't want anything to sneak up on me while out on the road at night, you know? Soon as I can, I'll be posting some pictures, as things start to actually progress. I'm gathering parts, at this stage and I'm about to get to the point where I can at least start on the motor. Waiting on the trans from a friend. I'll keep this thread going, as I can. Later on, Bill
Well, nothing to add really. Things have kinda stalled due to some difficulties I am experiencing. Got some situations to take care of and hope to get back on track in a little while. When I can get back at it, I've got a crankshaft bearing to collect from a friend, the 68' CB350 trans, from yet another friend and some more parts to locate for the build. Also, I have been given a CB175 front fender that may just work out very well. We'll have to see how that works out.
BTW, I suddenly realized that I didn't completely address clockworkoranges questions about the 360 6sp trans and I apologize for that. Fact is, I don't really know anything about it. Might be interesting though, if there is someone here that might have some knowledge on the subject. Later on, Bill
Well, I have some info to add to the Cb77 Project. I had picked up on a 63' CL72 a few years back and my buddy who helped me pick it up, has been eyeing it ever since. I finally came to the realization that I wasn't going to be able to do it justice (it needs a TOTAL going over) and we have made a deal. I was to get a set of NEW pistons for a CB77 cylinder (that I picked up on ebay last year) and a bore job to fit the pistons, a nice speedo/tach with a headlight shell that is new old stock, cables and gasket sets for the Super Hawk Build. Also, a set of carbs for my 80' CB750K, foot the charges for me to get a clear title on the 80' CB750k, among some other things. the day after my buddy picked up the CL72 and the clinder to take care of the piston thing, he called me to say that the pistons already fit the cylinders perfectly and they are STANDARD bore! I was amazed, to say the least! BTW, he's also going to paint it for me and WANTS to build the motor. He'd like to have the Super Hawk as well, but that ain't gonna happen. I may let him put it together, but it'll be after I get the 350 trans and get it installed (to work out any issues). I'll be back when I've got more to report,
Take care all, Bill
Well guys, I haven't been able to actually DO anything with my Super Hawk just yet, but I'm coming into some more parts though. I've got a buddy over on the SOHC4 forums that frequent quite a bit and I'm getting nearly a whole bike from him later this week (frame, forks, wheels, seat, complete engine, side covers, lights - which includes a complete headlight with the speedo/tach and a few more parts as well). Been kinda tied up with family things along with taking care of my Dad (he's 83yrs old and my brother along with his wife had been trying to get guardianship of him, put him in a "Nursing Home", push me completely out of the picture and take ALL of his assets and such) They had a "Lawsuit" filed and we (my Dad and I) beat them out on that! So, now that things have settled down some, I hope to get on with this build and, soon as I can get my pc back up to snuff along with getting a new printer, I'll be posting photos. Thank you for your patience, I've had a pretty good load to deal with so that I could get on with this. BTW, my Dad has been an avid motorcyclist nearly all his life (my Granddad started a motorcycle shop back in 1932 starting out with Indians.
More when I've got it, Bill Bill, great news about your dad! Like they say, you can pick your friends, but you can't pick your family! I'm jonesing to hear about that CB350 5 speed trans set-up. I've got an old timer friend out in West Marin who is the over 80 North American Motocross Champion. I think he must have beat the other guy? It's a combination USA and Canada deal. Love those old timers!
