Idle reving too high

Post by joeb » Sun Sep 16, 2007 9:22 pm

I am having problems with a '66 305 Scrambler. The bike starts great but once running up the idle wants to climb higher and higher. The only way to stop it is to increase the choke or shut it off. When the bike is off it seems like the slides are moving freely in the carbs but, apparently not when it's running. Could this be a case of the nut on top of the carb being too tight? If I took the slides out to clean should the carb nut be just finger tight? Does the nut connecting the throttle cable to the lid effect any thing? Thanks for anyone's advice.

High idle

Several things to check. Does the throttle have freeplay? Are the nuts holding carbs to head too tight, causing slides to hang up? Are the intake valves adjusted properly, not too tight. Do you have an intake leak? Spray carb cleaner around manifolds and listen for a change in idle speed. And of course the most simple, idle screws on carbs set correctly. Hope one these works for you. Nut on carb top meaning the big one has no effect. Small one in center is to adjust slack in cable.

if by mistake, you put the slide in the wrong carb, that will make for about 1/4 speed as idel. one of my friends did that, and I remember that was the way it acted.
