electrical issue with my CL77

Post by jarl1967 » Mon Oct 29, 2007 1:39 pm

my 1966 CL77 has been running great...but the other day i was riding to fill up the tank and it quit on me. i could not get it started again. i thought perhaps it was the battery because neither the neutral light nor the brake light will come on. turns out the battery is fine. i don't have the proper testing equipment, so i was hoping someone could point me in the right direction....basically, other than the battery what would keep the brake light or neutral light from working? bad wiring harness??

Check the fuse.............If that's the problem then you need to find the short that caused it to fail. Hope this helps.

Jarl,

Well, since it happened while you were riding it may be a loose connection due to vibration. Check your grounds including the main ground on your engine mount and possibly the connections on your ignition switch Do you have a multimeter? If so start from the battery and trace to where you have power and then half split it from there. I assume the entire bike is dead? no spark either?

Sometimes fuses upon visual inspection will appear fine, I always Ohm it out or use the diode check function on my multimeter to be sure.

Does the headlight still work? If you have a schematic try and find the common wire to the tailight and the neutral light(probably a ground) I have a schematic here and I will try and trace it for you in the meantime.

jarl,

Upon a quick inspection of the schematic, I see that the tail and neutral lamp are connected together by a 12-14 gauge black wire at the ignition switch (IG terminal) the blue wire from the taillamp changes to black on the other side of the stop lamp switch, interestingly enough the same black wire connects to your ignition coils which could explain why it does not start........... I would check the Ignition switch IG terminal first because that is your common point. Hope this helps
