Ok More help neededOk More help neededOn my CL77 project I have the Electronic Ignition on the way to sunny Calf. for a diagnosis. I have installed the points and condenser system from the parts bike. (No guarantee about the how great the system is, but the points didn't look that worn and the condenser was intact.) I have rebuilt both carbs with new kits. I have set the points and carbs with the suggested tune from Ed Moore in the FAQ. The bike starts right up, and idles down although some what slowly at times. When you take it out on the road, it flat spots bad. When you give it throttle it just dies under load. When you down shift and pull in the clutch, it picks back up. Suggestions please. I have owners manuals, parts listing manuals, and repair manuals on order, but sure would like to know what the problem is now. Input please. By the way, the plugs look real rich, (black with soot) when you pull them after ride. The good news is the clutch is great, and the bike shifts like a dream. Just thought I would stir up some conversation from the real wrench heads out there.
I had a similar problem, and it turned out I had made the fuel hoses to the carbs too long, and apparently there was air trapped in the lines. Once they were cut shorter, the problem disappeared. However, my plugs were fine. Sure you have the correct size main jets? Some of the rebuild kits supply mains that are much larger than stock. If all else fails, contact lm directly. --Randall
Thanks for the input RandallI have gotten the old girl pretty well dialed in considering the circumstances. I have no carb filters yet. I used some lawn mower air cleaner foam and hose clamps and found these were doing more harm than good. After I removed them it runs pretty good. The carbs are rebuilt, I have new points, (which I have not installed yet thanks to the wrong condenser being sent from an ebay purchase.) New plugs and plug wires made a world of difference. My plan is get it running decent enough to determine if needs a top end job or more before I start the complete make over. I have found that the Japanese machines need to be more exact when tuning than British. I have another CL77 coming in about a month or two from Florida with a load of extra parts so I have my work cut out for me. Thanks again for your interest.
Frustrated beyond beliefOk guys here is the scenario. I have changed the carb parts back to the old jets and needle valve after a good soaking and cleaning. The main jet is a 130 and 38 on idle jet. I have set the floats, new plugs, same condenser (the one off of ebay arrived with a short and I am waiting a replacement.) Timing is dead on, new plugs set at 28. I installed some mini baffles from J&P to get a little back pressure. Still waiting on air cleaners but put the foam temporaries back on. The bike will start on the first kick every time, with the choke set. Warms up fine and when you cut the choke completely, she will sit and idle all day and rev smoothly. When you take it out on the road and attempt to accelerate, it dies. I have tried carb adjustment, leaving the choke on at varying degrees and it still dies. Plugs do look a little black after a short run but the tips are tan. I shortened the fuel lines, cleaned the petcock and I am getting good flow. WHAT AM I MISSING??????????? This is the second weekend I have spent trying to sort this out and the wife is really getting ready to banish me to the garage permanently. One more thing, I also installed new plump o rings in the carb blocks and carb, looks like a good seal.
Did you check the compression yet?Kill the engine when it hits that flat spot and then check the plugs. This will tell you better what the plugs look like at the failure rather than at idle.Almost sounds like your flooding the engine.May want to spray some starter fluid around carbs. when at idle to see if you really do have a good seal even though you replaced the o-rings,I had a poor seal even with new orings. You will know right away if any of the fluid gets sucked in and the engine idles diffferent.Good luck.
davomoto, I OWE YOU A BEER. Checked the slides today, they were reversed. Apparently the previous owner had switched them during the last carb rebuild, so I would venture a guess, the bike has been sitting for quite awhile. Being used to British, where the cut out faces out, I thought they were correct. After the change, she runs great. It does smoke some on start up, so I would say a top end job will be forthcoming. Thanks Dave, Loud Mouse, and all of the rest on this site who have helped a "New" "Old Honda" owner get a good start on bringing one back. Let the tear down begin.
