CB72 what to do?

Post by magoopeter » Sat Feb 02, 2008 3:23 pm

Hello I have a bike which I bought of ebay as a job lot of parts. The reg is a British 635 ELX .I has no papers for the bike. My Friend who is a Triumph enthusiast thought this reg would be 1961.
Have looked at the frame number which is CB72- 21216 and the engine is CB72E-211255.I think this would make it a 1962 model.
I have noticed is that the engine has no tension arm for the primary drive chain.
I also have a complete set of forks that upper tubes are thicker than the other ones I have. There is a front wheel which is different around the Speedo drive and the linkages for front and back brake has no bolt to tension on them they just slide on. Also I have a headlight with switches lights and Speedo which appears to be bigger than the rest.
Would these parts be correct for a 1962 CB72 and is it worth building as such.
I have already started to build the bike as a road going CB72 and replaced the bottom engine casing with a tensioned primary chain type.
My friends observation got me thinking about the age of this bike but I am sure I also have engine casings which are 1961 starting with 1 the have no middle oil way to the barrels just like the above bike. Any thoughts or advice about the above bike would be helpful.
One other thing which has turned up in my parts a crank with a copper alloy? Right side web (fly wheel) and a left side casing on which the removable panel to the oil filter when removed leaves an access hole the same diameter as the panel unlike the others which leave a small hole. I have ordered the bill silvers guide but would like to know sooner than later. Regards Magoo
