Engine restore

Post by Joshes » Fri Feb 15, 2008 12:41 am

I hope I can still ask this question. I want to rebuild my CB77 Engine to show quality. Can anyone share their experience on what to do and of course not to do? I read one post is to sandblast the engine from coarse then to fine. Is this the right method?
Should paint apply? If so, what kind of paint?

Thanks guys!
Josh

Blast the cases, cylinder, and cylinder head with glass beads, not sand. The clutch and kicker covers were silver. Krylon dull aluminum seems to be the accepted color of most restorers. See my engine rebuild post in the restoration section. There are pics of parts bead blasted.

Some engines I have built I beadblast the cases with fine glass beads, then put a real light coat of silver powdercoat on and bake it. The finish looks tremendous and is gas and solvent resistant. You have to watch the color of silver though, some is too bright. I buy mine from absolute powder off ebay it is a semi gloss silver. Not flashy at all. 305 nutt

What about Crystalline Silica? Is that considered sand or glass? I have some of this, but I am not sure what exactly it is, and if it should be used on the engine to sandblast, or if it is too coarse.

I have been using the medium beads, but the parts come out pretty dull.

Do folks tend to bead blast the carbs, too? I tried it on one carb tonight, and its clean, but again, pretty dull. No shine.

I'm gonna have to try to find some fine beads to check out.

Scottie,
If you want to check out an excellent example of an engine restore, check out the Hobbies/Interests/Passions forum on this site. Paul "4shorts" has a restoration of a Honda C200 that has a really detailed process of almost everything. He does an amazing job on every part of the bike. He says not to bead blast the parts that you want to shine. He suggests to buff the parts that you want to shine, and he has the process of that as well, and he shows what buffing compounds he uses. The finished product looks amazing!
