CAN SOMEONE HELP WITH CARB OVERFLOW ISSUE?

Post by ROBM50 » Tue Mar 25, 2008 10:39 pm

Hey guys! I'm getting a slow drip from my overflow nipple of my 305 dream bike carb when bike is sitting idle with engine off. I suspect there may be a float malfunction but my other concern is that obviously there's gas still available to the carb even with the petcock being in the off position. The petcock has just been rebuilt but problem still persist. Can someone please help? Rob

Hi Rob

The obvious suspect is the float needle not seating properly. I think I've read of people
having problems with the Keyster kits so if you fitted new ones maybe worth going back to
the originals.
If you have the carb off and remove the float bowl, you could try checking by inverting the
carb body and letting the float close the feed and then blow down the fuel line. On mine gentle
pressure will stop air getting through - not very scientific but seems to work.

If you turn off the petrol tap then there will still be fuel in the pipes at a higher level than the
floats so it could feed down .. making its way past a leaky float needle.

Also could be crap in the fuel holding it open ?

I usually shut my fuel off and run my carb. low on gas whenever I let mine sit.Take fuel infeed off carb with petcock off and see if it is seeping any fuel.If that is ok then the float needle and float height should be addressed.I have been using the Keyster float needle with old seat with no problem on my CA77.It does sound like the float needle though.

Rob, I've found this on two carbs recently. The brass tube in the float bowl had a hairline crack in it. You can fill the bowl with gas when off the bike, and see if it drips. I went to my local hobby shop, and bought brass tubing the correct size for 2 bucks. It's enough material to make 10 of them. Let us know what you find!

The crack was in the brass overflow tube inside the float bowl, not the flaots! Fill the bowl with fuel while off the bike, and see if it drips. If not, the tube is not the problem.
