Polished Case Covers: Possible?

Post by 305explr » Wed Mar 26, 2008 9:05 pm

Has anyone ever tried polishing the case covers or seen any polished ones on a 305? Mine were so flaked and filthy that I stripped them for painting. Now I'm wondering if polishing is a possible route to take. I'm not doing a full-on stock restoration.

Anyone want to weight in on the feasabiliy of this? (Quality of aluminum Honda used, maintenance, etc...)

I hope so, I am going to try. See my "My New Buffer" thread under Off Topic. Also see "bills ca77" under Restoration Projects the case covers on his bike are blindingly (is that a word?) polished. Oh, and under Hobbies | Interests | Passions see 4shorts C100 and C200 threads, lots of polished aluminum on those as well.

Polished cases

I considered polishing the cases on my CL and found that it's difficult at best to get into all the crooks and crannys to get them perfect. All scratches will have to be sanded and removed prior to attempting the final polish.

If the scratches are deep start with medium sandpaper and work your way to say 600 grit prior to polishing, feathering the areas so you do not sand gouges into the case.

Unless you seal the polished areas with a protective coat the aluminum will eventually oxidize requiring a rebuff.

I opted for the Krylon Dull Aluminum paint on my cases and am happy with the results.

If you have the time and equipment..............go for it!

polished CL cases

I polished both of the side cases on my '66 CL about 18 months ago. I know its not correct, but I don't have to deal with the chips and scratches in the Krylon anymore... and it still looks good.
