Carb ajustments out of control...HELP!!

Hi,
I have a '66 Super Hawk and took apart the carbs and cleaned them. I was going put in new carb kits but the parts looked great inside. Now the bike runs and I can adjust the idle but the plugs are black and sootie and eventually foul out. I adjusted the mixture screws and the bike idles well with both carb screws fully closed. What's up with that? Does anyone have any thoughts please? I'm getting worn out...Thanks, Larry

Larry, sounds like you may have installed the slides on the wrong sides. The cut out in the bottom of the slide should face rearward, toward air filter. If you remove the slides, they are also stamped PW26R for right, and PW26L for left. The caps that the cables go into are also left and right, the cable should be toward the inside for smoother routing. I've also had main jets fall out of main jet holder abd cause similiar problems.

Thanks davomoto.....the sliders were in correct..but this leads to another note I read in this forum somewhere, I read that there should be no springs under the adjustment screws. I have springs under the idle adjust and the mixture screws. IF there isn't supposed to be springs under the mixing screws, this might account for the rich mixture??? I seated the mixing screws to bottom with the springs installed and came out 1 1/8 turns like other blogs state, now if there isn't supposed to be springs in the mix screw that could account for the rich mixture right? I would be using the spring as bottom when infact the "bottom" would be the "real" bottom without the springs...right? Your thoughts are greatly appreciated...Thanks, Larry

The carb does require the springs!!!!!!!!!!! There is an old saw "The carb problem is in direct proportion to the miss adjustment of the points". Also you may want to cut 1/4 inch from each end of the plug wire and to isolate if the plug cap is the problem swap it with the good side. ...................lm

Thanks...and I did go to the points again and regapped them. It runs much better. I was focusing too much on the carbs I think. It has good low and high speed throttle now. Another question....I read in the forum that if you don't need to start the bike with the choke, then the carbs are set too rich. I adjusted my brains out on both sides to get both sides firing ok and it starts up "right now" either cold or hot. Is this a bad thing? The mix screws go in and then out 1 1/4 turn cold then readjust when warm??? So the mix screw is turned in for leaner and out for richer? Thanks a ton Im!

Did you just gap the points, or did you follow Eds tune up recipie? It can be found under FAQs on the main site. Turning screws in makes it leaner, out richer.

I gapped the points and I do have Ed's receipe for the tune-up. I'll try and do it his way...but it looks sort of complicated...I have the time and tools but I'm not so sure I understand the terminology. I'll give it a shot tomorrow. Thanks again for your reply...Larry
