Magneto Ignition

Post by tomtim » Sun Apr 13, 2008 5:49 pm

New to Forum. Great Job lots of interesting information. I am an old time "biker" riding more than 40 years. I mostly have owned Triumphs but recently I have played with a 305 Dream made to look like a much earlier retro racer. My question. I have adapted Fairbanks Morse magnetos to most of my Triumphs, making them totaly independent as far as ignition goes. My plan is to adapt a single cylinder magneto to a 305 Dream motor in a wasted fire system. I would like to turn this off the camshaft, but will consider the crank. Has anyone ever done or seen this done? Fairbanks Morse magnetos are used by ARD and Joe Hunt on many applications and are nearly bullit proof in my experiences. Your thoughts?

Sorry if I appear a) stupid, or b) derisory, but why? I mean, why would you want to go to all that mechanical trouble only to screw up an ignition system that has outlasted so many other parts on these bikes?
Sorry again; it's a hiding to nothing and I, personally, think you should buy a set of points and a condenser and let the bike run for another 40-odd years as Soichiro designed it to.

I, like you, am an old-time biker of 40 or so years. BSA Bantams, Francis Barnett, Tiger Cubs by the bucket-load, James Captain (197cc Villiers), Ambassador Sport (250cc Villiers 2T), Triumph Speed Twin, BSA A7SS; not one of them could hold a candle to the reliability of my CB77 back then.

Good luck and regards,

Steve

PS: I'm British, btw
