Testing Coil CA77

Post by BrewCityDream » Sun Apr 27, 2008 10:26 pm

Hi I have a 1964 CA77 Dream I have been slowly working on restoring the past few years. Can anyone tell me how to diagnose the ignition coil with a multimeter to see if it is working or even recieving the right voltage? What other components might i look at as well to diagnose a starting problem? I have only gotten my dream to fire once for a brief 30 seconds. I currently have ordered a new wiring harness and have seen the threads on here about buying aftermarket coils - and spark plug wire sets. But can't find any info on testing an existing coil. Hope to post a few pics soon!

Hey,
I actually live in Milwaukee and recently went through the same situation. It's hard to test a coil without pulling it, so what I did was went to Milwaukee Cycle and found a used coil and wired it in with alligator clips bypassing the stock coil. The bike still wouldn't fire the plugs, so that's how I knew it wasn't the coil.

Believe it or not, it turned out to be a weak spark caused by an old battery connected to the circuit. I had been jump-starting it off another running bike and even my car, but the old battery was still there sucking up current. As soon as I disconnected the old battery the bike fired right up.

Are you getting gas? My petcock is a little clogged and to rule that out I ran a 4-foot 1/4" gas line to a funnel and poured gas into the carb manually to bypass the tank and petcock.

I have the coil and condenser still (haven't returned it yet) so if you want to borrow it you're welcome to try that -- if you install it and still have no spark than you can look elsewhere.
