front fender repair

Post by 3BeanCrispy » Sat May 10, 2008 8:05 am

anyone tried to repair the typically bent bottom back lip of thier front fender themselves? have any luck ? mine is bent up like most i've seen. i bought a second one and it's bent up even worse ( only paid $10 for it thank goodness ). i'm planning to use the worse of the 2 as a practice piece before trying to 'coax' my original one back into form. I have very little (read:none) body work/repair experience, but one of my goals for this project is to learn new things, so i'd rather at least give it a go myself before turning it over to a pro. Any advice/tips/experience would be helpful, expecially if it was something that didn't work and shouldn't be attempted<laugh>. The closer one of the 2 in the picture is my original. Thanks in advance!

I did some work to one and with some effort you should be able to work it out and depending on how fussy you are.May need to take your time with some bondo for filler work.Up to you on how fast you want it done..good luck.Joe

try to get it in to shape without too much hammer. if you stretch the metal too far, you will need a professional to get it back in to shape. i've had pretty good luck with large crescent wrenches, waterpump pliers, vice grips, and a C-clamp. you will need a hammer, but use it sparingly. you can work it against a piece of pipe, or large wooden dowel to smooth the flare at the end of the fender.

but if you have a chrome shop in your area, they can press it in to pretty nice shape, and you can go from there. last time i had that done it only cost like $35 or something, and i didn't even need to use Bond on it.
good luck!

excellent tips, thanks ! from the little experience i have i know how damaging the hammer method can be! someone i work with recommended using abit 'o heat to help make the fender more malleable.think this is a good idea?

i think heat should be left to the professionals. it makes it even easier to stretch things.
