Did you check and make sure your ground on the frame is clean, also the battery terminals clean and tight?Does anything at all work-Horn neutral light.

The ground seems pretty solid, and the battery is new, so everything is clean. I went out the next day, and the same thing happened. My brother suggested that the battery might be just strong enough to run the lights and the engine for a few seconds, but that my electrical system is not supporting it at all. I've misplaced my horn, so I couldn't test that, and I don't believe my neutral light works, period. I'm charging the battery, and will try to start it without the lights and see what happens.

Are you still using the stock rectifier? It may be causing to drain your battery.I switched to a soild state one from Radio Shack for a few dollars.Make sure all connections from stator are ok also.

To my knowledge, all of the electrical system is bone stock save for the lack of a starter button. The stator connections seem adequate. I may look into this solid state business, it sounds promising. There's nothing quite like 45 year old motorcycle wiring. Thanks for the support.

An update. As it turns out, the second idling attempt did blow the 10a fuse from the battery. I replaced the fuse and made sure that there are no loose/bare wires contacting any metal. There were a few suspect places where the horn wire cover was a little thin, so that may be where the trouble happened. I then started the bike, and attempted to steady the idle. Just trying to find the right combination of idle screw and air screw to have it run without a hand on the throttle. I ran out of time before the idle steadied, but at least the bike is running. I've also taken to disconnecting the battery in between starting attempts.
