Been lurking but the time has come to buy....

Post by rfinley » Sun Jun 22, 2008 8:02 pm

Hi, I have been lurking for some time while I have been looking for a 305 Dream. Well I am going to look at a 1969 CA77 Dream with around 3000 miles on the odometer. It is running but I was wondering what I should look for or be careful of when looking at the bike. My first thoughts would be a compression test. The owner does say it probably would need carburetor cleaning. What would be a good price to offer for this bike ??

Thanks in advance for your thoughts...

As usual it all depends on condition and missing parts. A bike with all the parts there and not running is much more valuable to me than a running bike with a few missing parts.

Look for the lower chain guard, carb covers and mufflers. See if anything has been cobbled together or bad wiring job.

In my case any engine that old is going to be coming apart for at a minimum new rings, lap valves and gaskets. Possibly more depending on what I found.

Thanks for the advice. I just bought a '66 Honda Dream too. Everything is intact and it runs, the paint is in nice shape and it only has 4000 on the odometer. It even has the red seat in great condition.

The only thing broken are the turn signals which are cracked off on one side of the bike. The bike came with the original tool kit intact and the original manual too.

I'll be going over the mechanical stuff thoroughly in the upcoming weeks.

I also own a Lambretta Jet 200 which is actually my daily rider and has been for the past two years.

Well, I made arrangements to go see it this weekend. It is about 3.5 hours from me but it sounds like it may be worth the ride. The pictures that were sent looks like the bike is complete but the pictures could have been from any bike. We will see what it looks in person !!

Thanks for the advice on thing to look for....
