engine tear down

Post by axemanking » Fri Jul 11, 2008 10:46 am

I certainly will. As I'm going to be learning engines on this project I will need all the help I can get.

Getting Started

Post by axemanking » Tue Jul 15, 2008 11:34 am

Well, I was hoping to get a start last weekend, but the restoration guides that I ordered didn't come in. Alas.
Since I'm lacking these precious tomes, I don't even know where to start. I've taken off the exhaust pipes and the seat. What sorts of things should I be doing first?

Also, I have a guy that's interested in buying this, what's a fair price, based on the pics I've posted?

Well, if you plan on painting it. I'd just start taking it apart. Be sure to label everything and keep the assemblies seperated and with thier bolts/nuts. I like to use post-it notes and a sharpie, with zip lock bags. I just put all the bolts from the, say, rear fender assembly, in one bag and put a note in it that says "rear fender" that way i don't loose track of all the bits and pieces. if you feel comfortable with it, get it down to just the frame and paint it. You'll be taking the motor off for work anyway.
I'd clean the carbs, and make a check list of all of the things you're going to have to order. If you have trouble knowing if you have the complete assembly or not, i use powersportspro.com to check each assembly. they list the cb77 as a 1961 only i believe, but for the most part its fine.

order your parts from ebay if you can, or westernhillshonda, or ohiocycle.

sanding/painting your bike should take up a good week or so, i'd figure. Unless you're a machine with lots of time on your hands.
by then you're books will be in and you can take a look at that engine of yours.

pricing?

If it's running and good to ride with out any problems after you've restored it, I'd say 1500-2k +whatever you spent on it. You can factor in labor hours if you'd like. but a nicely restored superhawk going for 3-5k is perfectly reasonable in my head. Might want to consult some of the more knowledgable people though. i'm just 25 years old and doing shitty resto jobs myself. :/
