1965 305
lm,
My CL77 is the same way -- black paint on the frame that you can scratch with your fingernail to reveal the red beneath, and red over the sheat metal parts. It looks like someone did a good job painting it, but used rattle cans. Do you see this very often? Did dealers do this to update bike that hadn't sold by 1968? Just wondering. It's because it's a 1964.
Your title is the actual year it was sold. .................lm What do you want to know. If it was actually sold the year of 1968 that is the number which will be on the first year sold no matter the color. Get one of Bill Silver books and read and you will learn a LOT. ..........lm

The bike was on the road in 1966 and changed hands in 1967 to the guy I got the bike from. The title says it's a 1965. The numbers say it's a 1964. I find it odd the bike was taken apart and painted a factory colour when it was almost new. Have you heard of dealers painted bikes? Was there a shortage of black bikes? Thanks again
What you have is common because when we bought them we owned them and did what we wanted with them. Just what the devil does it matter if it was repainted by someone? Your bike is just another one of THOSE Super Hawks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Do you want it to be unusual???????????????. .............LM

I think the problem here is that you were so busy trying to find the truth that when it showed up you ignored it because it wasn't what you thought you were looking for.
There wasn't a shortage of black bikes... someone just got a red one and decided they'd rather have a black one after the purchase. '65 CB77
