Finally got my bike up and running and have been riding it to work. On the first day, I thought I would have enough fuel to make the 20 mile highway drive. Total tank mileage around 130, ran out of fuel, I must have the on and reserve mixed up, but that is another issue.
Pushed it to get gas, put in a little over 3 gallons, drove probably another 130, went to the "on" swithed when it started to cut out, at the gas stations put in another 3 gallons.
I guess I was expecting to get a little better mileage 45 mpg. She runs fine, tops out around 65mph, any more settings I could adjust or just bad rings(does smoke a little).
Any suggestions???
Fuel Mileage - 66 CA7745mpg does seem a bit on the low side. How do the spark plugs look? They should be coffee colored (with cream and sugar:) ). There are all sorts of things that can have a dramatic effect on mileage. First, make sure the engine is tuned as well as possible. Valves, points, timing, carburetor adjustments and air filter must all be up to spec because they can all make a difference. So can drag caused by rubbing brake shoes, dried out wheel bearings etc. The speed and way you drive also has an effect on mileage. The faster you drive, the worse the fuel mileage. I would just tune it up according to the information in the manual and this site and just ride it. If it smokes a little that might mean the rings aren't all that great (compression test to verify) which also can cause a drop in mileage but if it starts, runs and pulls well then it's not critical yet. Try the simple basic tune up stuff and I'll bet the mileage improves. These engines run pretty well within a wide range of tune but the better they're tuned the better the economy.
