65 CB7765 CB77I am new to the world of Superhawks & Scramblers, but I was able to acquire my first 1965 CB77. All main parts are on the bike, but it needs a lot of work. I plan to take the time to do it right and do it complete. I have a few questions:
Part availability? Resources? Best place to start? I plan to take a lot of pictures, strip it down to the frame and start there. How is Bill Silvers books? Necessary? I would apreciate any advise. Thanks Red Rider bill silvers books are wonderful.
if you have a laptop in the shop, you might want his CD which has not only the books info, but a lot more plus the owners manual etc... parts: there are several sources. ebay is a great one. western hills honda is another. and a few other places that i haven't personally done any business with. all i can say is read read read and ask a lot of questions. at least that's what i've done, maybe i'm annoying :P but my bike is just about finished! '66 CB450k0 '93 HD FXR Thanks Gun,
I have no problem asking a lot of questions. I am happy to know that I can get into this bike and not end up with a pile of parts, because replacement parts are not available. I will look into getting Bills books and start studying. I do appreciate you and this forum for all the information. Don't worry, I am sure I will be back with more questions. What parts are you looking for? A lot of the people on this group have a lot of extra or leftover parts. You might check here first. Loud Mouse has helped me find stuff that I was convinced was absolutely unobtainable. Even though I am a relative newbie on this forum, even I have some pretty good parts stuck away in the attic.
I agree with Gun. I wish I had bought the CD instead of the Bill Silver books. Where are you in southeast Kansas? Thanks for the advise Okie88. I'm just about north of you in Saint Paul.
This bike is in good condition. both fenders are good, not dents. Gas tank has rust inside. Is there a treatment out there for rust in the tank? The exhaust is rusted and will need to be replaced. The seat pad is all but gone but that should be no big deal. One part that is missing is the kick start. I don't know the condition of the engine or carb as I just got this one last saturday. I am sure they will need a rebuild.
Hey, Red,
I'm a relative newbie, too. Bought my CL about 3 years ago, and only started work about a year ago. Your last post caught my eye. I didn't know there was a Saint Paul in KS -- mapquest actually shows two of them near Wichita. I grew up in Saint Paul -- Minnesota. Regarding rusty tanks, I just did mine with the POR-15 US Standard sealer, and I recommend it. Be sure to follow the instructions (cleaning, etching, etc.). BTW, for your tank you only need the pint size, so don't get the quart like I did. I ended up using it on a few of my leaky Dietz lantern founts and a couple of old gas jerry cans I had here, to use it up. Good luck, Scottie '65 CL77 (in pieces right now...)
