Kick starter falls when using electric starter

Post by mike69 » Wed Sep 03, 2008 4:11 pm

I have a 66 305 Dream that I have been working on for 4 years to get it back in shape. It sat unprotected outdoors for about 25 years, the speeodometer had 12,000 mi..I replaced the cylinders pistons and heads and got in running a few weeks ago.
Heres the problem. When I use the electric starter the kick starter falls as though you are kicking it.It stays down while the motor is running. The clutch works ok.
When the motor is not running you can pull the kick starter up and it will stay up.
The kick starter will start the engine also. HELP!

Does it return on it's own when you kickstart it? The problem may be in the right cover. Disassemble and inspect assembly. make sure the return spring is wound correctly. You have to wind up the kick lever, and then slide it over the kick shaft when puuting the cover on engine.

When you use the kick starter it wont come back up without help.I tried adding an extra revolution of the lever but didn't help.

Check the way the spring is installed.
As you look at the side when installing it you want the spring to look like an "S" where the bolt installs. .........lm

kick starter

I talked to a Honda tech yesterday and he told me something is probably out of sync in the starter mech. I re-read the manual and when it came to clutch installation it showed that there is a timing mark on the kick starter gear and it has to line up with a window in the crankcase.I took the clutch cover off of an extra engine that I have and sure enough there is a mark on the gear. About a year ago I removed the whole clutch set-up off of a donor bike and placed it on my current Dream. Since I didn't know about the timing mark it's probably out of sync like tech told me. Will pull it apart tomorrow and let you know how it works out.

kick starter

I pulled both the right and left covers off and set the kick starter alignment with the mark. Put it back together, no change. I even intalled an extra kick starter off of another engine. It doesn't make any grinding noises or feel like any teeth are broken. If you pull the kick starter back up it will stay in any position that you set it just will not pull back up by itself.
Could it be something is gummed up from not being ridden for 25 years? Haven't driven it on the road yet since I don't have insurance or registrartion.

Mike, remove the spring, and clean and re-grease everthing in that cover. Old grease gets hard, and does'nt lube any more. Take a pic of inside cover before disassembly and post it here.
